Staying up-to-date with the latest developments is vital in any technology field, but especially when it comes to software and programming. One of the fastest—and most enjoyable—ways to keep learning is to attend a conference. With thousands available, though, where do you start?

We put together this directory of the top programming and software development conferences of 2020 that are most beneficial. Dates, locations, and prices are included so you can align your priorities with your need. This directory will be updated, so check back regularly. Top Programming & Software Development Conferences for 2020

DeveloperWeek

Date: February 12-16, 2020
Location: San Francisco, CA

One of the world’s largest expo and conferences for developers, DeveloperWeek features 50 different events over the course of the week. The main DeveloperWeek Conference and Expo typically sees more than 8,000 attendees, hosting talks from leaders in the field. This year’s top professionals hail from Google, Facebook, Yelp, Rackspace, IBM, Cloudera, Red Hat, Optimizely, SendGrid, Blackberry, Microsoft, Neo Technology, Eventbrite, Klout, Built.io, and Ripple.

Some conference tracks include dev technologies that are constantly innovating: from blockchain and AI to big data and quantum computing. Particular events include:

  • DeveloperWeek Hackathon, which sees more than 1,000 attendees and invites area developers to build apps from scratch to compete for a cash prize.
  • DevExec World, new this year, is two days of roundtable talks, educational talks, and networking events for engineering managers, tech executives, and lead developers.

O’Reilly Software Architecture Conference

The O’Reilly Software Architecture Conference is a massive conference that provides resources that cover the full scope of a software architect’s duties. The conference is a forum for networking, where expert speakers and real-world professionals share their insights and experiences. There are also professional training and teaching opportunities needed to excel in this field.

Sessions at the 2020 event will cover topics like microservices, cloud computing, and serverless, as well as emerging trends in AI, machine learning, and data analytics. Keynote speakers this year include:

PowerShell and DevOps Global Summit

Date: April 27-30, 2020
Location: Bellevue, WA
Cost: $1,750

The PowerShell and DevOps Global Summit is an annual event featuring expert presenters and an opportunity for the entire PowerShell community to network and share ideas. With a focus on Microsoft’s PowerShell automation and configuration tool, the conference offers attendees the opportunity to engage with experts, product team members, and like-minded peers.

This 400+ level event is an excellent opportunity if you’re working with PowerShell, Desired State Configuration, and related technologies—especially if you’re moving your organization toward a DevOps environment.

Facebook F8

Date: May 5-6, 2020
Location: Online and select events in San Jose, CA
Cost: $595

Facebook F8 is intended for developers and entrepreneurs who build products and services around the social media platform. The event features more than 50 sessions and focuses on all concepts related to the social media leader. Deep-dive sessions and product demos showcase the latest in AI, open source, AR/VR, developer programs as well as new tools across Facebook’s family of apps.

While the highlight of the conference is Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s keynote, attendees can usually expect at least one big announcement regarding Facebook products or new innovations. Zuckerberg’s 2019 keynote addressed issues like growing privacy concerns, updates to Instagram, Facebook Messenger, and Facebook’s core service, more news about the Oculus Quest and Rift S virtual reality headsets, and a new dating feature on the site.

Apple WWDC

The Apple Worldwide Developers Conference is Apple’s largest event for developers—it dominates the tech scene and garners the attention of press, industry experts, customers, and MacOS and iOS developers. The event features in-depth technical sessions, hands-on labs in a collaborative group setting, one-on-one consultations with Apple experts by appointment, and entertaining talks by industry experts and luminaries.

The 2019 WWDC was a huge event, with Apple introducing feature after feature and new versions of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, and watchOS over the course of a 2.5-hour keynote.

QCon New York

Date: June 15-17, 2020
Location: New York City, NY

QCon is an international software development conference that helps software teams adopt new trends and technologies. QCon New York features 15 editorial tracks over three days with 140+ industry experts from companies such as Google, Uber, Slack, Dropbox, Twitter, and more.
